Motown Classics

Motown Classics

A Loss for Words are a five-piece pop punk band from Boston, Massachusetts. Having gained a good amount of attention from being associated with Massachusetts brethren Four Year Strong, AL4W have followed in their steps by creating a covers album. Motown Classics is A Loss for Words' first album for Paper + Plastick Records and the follow-up to their debut The Kids Can't Lose. How is it?It's fun. A Loss for Words may not be as talented as some of their pop punk peers, but they are certainly just as hardworking and passionate as any other band out there. On this cover album, the band get a good selection of hits that everyone should know by heart already, which makes for a few fun listens the first times you hear the record. The lighthearted vocals and hook-laden guitar parts show that A Loss for Words definitely know how to execute their style. However, for the most part, this album drags on after a few listens. It's generically enjoyable but it's repetitive and most listeners probably won't return to Motown Classics save a few standout tracks. Choice cuts include "All Night Long", "Do You Love Me", "My Girl", and "You Can't Hurry Love", but some of the other tracks seem a bit filler-ish. On "I Want You Back", Alan Day and Dan O'Connor of Four Year Strong are featured on vocals, nicely complementing A Loss for Words' sound. "Do You Love Me" is my personal favorite, a short and sweet number with a chorus that is easy to sing along to with your friends.Summer has started, and if you're looking for a fun album or some car music, look no further than this. A Loss for Words are as worthy of your dollar as any other band out there. It's important to take this album for what it is and nothing more; covers albums can come off as a disappointment to fans of a band, but A Loss for Words have managed to put out a few fun songs that will be a treat to hear live.
