All Strung Out Denman Maroney's multi-layered 'hyperpiano' technique meshes remarkably smoothly with Dominic Lash's elevated turn on doublebass in this series of nine improvisations, 'All Strung Out'. The journey they undertake unfolds and reveals at an alarming pace. Through glancing sonic collisions and temporal deviations the strings of the piano and the bass weave a complex, narrative web of discovery and description. There is unease embedded in the conversation - evocative, elusive, tactile and intangible. Things appear and then vanish. Maroney and Lash met in 2010 at the Music Omi foundation in upstate New York and cemented their transatlantic alliance back in New York, when they joined reedsman Tim Hodgkinson for a concert at The Stone in September 2011. Its success prompted a performance at London's Café Oto early in 2012, which I had the good fortune to witness, memorable for its combination of exhilarating technique and invention, and for the humility which underscored their dialogue.
