Edgar is the collaboration between Oberlin Conservatory-educated classical guitarist Drew Spice, rock-influenced singer/songwriter CJ Messinger, and percussionist Clay Sowell. Formed in 2006, Edgar has run the gamut from experimental music with a spooky undercurrent to rock-and-roll concept albums covering various unusual subjects, such as 2012's "Insects." Edgar is known for its use of various string instruments, catchy melodies, pensive lyrics, and sparingly used harmonized backing vocal arrangements. The 2013 "Blacklung EP" brings an array of new songs and new sounds from the driving rock and acerbic lyrics of "Iodine" to the happy-go-lucky "Ladybug." An acoustic guitar and ukelele duet is the focus of the folky "Cleo," while "Love In The Bank" provides a humorous alt-rock take on a bank heist. The title track of the EP, "Blacklung" features a lush electric arrangement with simple lyrics that ponder personal loss and interpersonal relationships.
