Touring Cinema
Recently my folks uncovered a ticket which turned out to be an entrance ticket to my Grandfather's touring cinema operation in South Africa in the late 1920's. (That's the actual ticket on the front cover!) He had purchased the equipment in the USA on his way to South Africa from Lithuania and proceeded to tour around remote areas of South Africa that had never seen a cinema projection before. The creation of this album was inspired by this concept, and although it is not limited to an African musical style, it is the idea of old and new world and east and west and rich and poor and north and south all coming together that was interesting to me. From the South African chant in 'Mamelodi' by the famous Vusi Mahlasela, to the musical setting of the Adhan (call to prayer) in 'Akbar' to the Thai folk song set to music in 'Solstice', this album traverses the planet and the peoples of the world who make it breathe. There are 3 bonus tracks at the end which are remixes of songs from the album.
