The Same but Worse
Topaz was a "fusion" band formed in Hawaiʻi in 1976, by a bunch of then high-schoolers. They were notable in that they were pretty young to be playing the sort of complex style of music that had recently evolved. They were good, and they were popular, but never recorded anything. They disbanded after a few years while members pursued other things,some of them leaving Hawaiʻi. The individual members eventually ended up in a variety of interesting career positions - one is the bass player and musical director for Carlos Santana, one is a Professor of Saxophone at Mannes College of Music, one became the premier, first-call drummer and orchestral percussionist in Hawaiʻi, and one became a chip designer at various high-level processor companies such as Texas Instruments, AMD, and Creative Labs. Over 30 years later, they all decided it was time to get together again and play some music. They did, reuniting for a show in Hawaiʻi in 2014.
